Letters from the IRS can be scary. Luckily, IRS Notice CP01A is nothing to worry about. In this post, we’ll discuss what this notice is and what you should do with it.

What is IRS Notice CP01A?

If you received an IRS Notice CP01A, the IRS has assigned you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This unique six-digit number is a security measure that helps prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). This IP PIN is only valid during the current calendar year and a new IP PIN will be issued at the beginning of each year.

Why did I receive an IRS Notice CP01A?

Notices are mailed to taxpayers who have either:

  1. Been a victim of tax-related identity theft

  2. Opted in to get an IP PIN

What if I didn’t receive IRS Notice CP01A?

If you didn’t receive an IRS Notice CP01A but need an IP PIN to file your tax return, you can get your IP PIN using the Get an IP PIN tool on the IRS website. You must have an IRS account to use this service. If you can’t get your IP PIN online, you can call the IRS at (360) 908-4490 to request your IP PIN in the mail.

What do I do with IRS Notice CP01A?

Your IP PIN will be located on IRS Notice CP01A. Those who receive an IP PIN must enter the unique six-digit number on their tax return when filing or the tax return will be rejected. Each taxpayer who has an IP PIN must enter it on the tax return, this includes the primary taxpayer, spouse, and dependents. If you plan on filing your tax return with a tax professional, you should provide the letter alongside your other tax documents.
